This weekend, I volunteered to do safety/communications for the Ironman Bike Tour, a fund raiser for the Minnesota division of Youth Hostels International. This is my fourth year volunteering for the Ironman and third year at the Lonsdale, MN rest stop. I think I really had my game on this year. Here's how I did it:

Radio preparation:

Kenwood TM-D700 in my F-350, crossbanding into the Burnsville repeater (146.210, no tone) at 50 watts.
Truck parked in the highest part of the parking lot, since the VFW building was down in a gully.

Inside the building:

Where: Peter's house (comment if you need directions, I'll email you).
Who: Anyone who wants some quiet writing/creative time.
When: 10A-8P, Sunday, November 25th.
What: Food, WiFi, lots of cozy places to sit, perch, lounge, etc.

Note: There are two cats in the house. Sorry in advance to those who have allergies.

This tiny GAWK program is an example of how to listen on a TCP socket and spit out some useful info for anyone who connects. I whipped it up today to figure out the external IP address of someone's telnet proxy.

Note that it must run as root to bind port 23 (at least, on *nix machines). You can, of course, change the port number. Remember to also change the :23 to your new port number if you wish to retain the function of spitting out the connecting IP.

#!/usr/bin/gawk -f
BEGIN {
  RS = ORS = "\r\n";
  S="/inet/tcp/23/0/0";

Subject: Misquoting Rep. Ellison

Mr. Harnden, I'm disappointed at how Rep. Ellison's comments are being mischaracterized by the press, and as you're a party to the fray, I'm calling you on it. This letter regards your article published at http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/07/14/wbush114...

It was one thing after another this morning. First, I had to wait for my pants to finish drying - I forgot to throw them in the dryer last night. Then my motorcycle had a dead battery*, so I had to jump start it.

Yeah, I'm whining.

* Last night, I left the keys in, lights on, while Amber and I dealt with the baby rabbits that the neighbor's dog had been using for chew toys. When we got back from the Humane Society, the bike was dead - but I didn't notice then, of course.

I will no longer be volunteering with the Red Ribbon Ride. If you wish to donate to a charity to sponsor me, please donate to the MS Society.

I'm still looking for sponsors for The MS Society and The Red Ribbon Ride. If you don't want to make a direct donation, I'm happy to put in some work in exchange - I can help you landscape or help you move (using my enclosed trailer).

EDIT: Fixed "help you move" link. It only worked from luno.org, not LJ. Oops.

No, not the local amateur radio repeater, but on broadcast FM.

I was just on KS95's drive time show ("Moon and Stacey"). They asked if anybody was doing anything interesting, and I got a chance to plug all three agencies I'm volunteering for: The Red Ribbon Ride, The MS Society and MN Youth Hostels (the Ironman). I told them that I volunteer to do ride safety for the five bike tours these agencies hold this summer.

Rock on!
