I've added the following audiovisual equipment to my list of resources available for use by non-profit organizations.

  • Primary amp/speaker system:
    • (2) JBL JRX125 floor-standing loudspeakers (500w program/2000w peak)
    • (2) 50ft speaker cables
    • Crown 802D Amplifier (800w x2) (requires 12A/120v power)
    • 16 Channel rackmount line-level mixer
  • Secondary amp/speaker system:
    • (2) No-name PA speakers (200w program/300w peak)
    • 300w (150w x2) Tuner/amplifier

Yes, I'm a DJ.

After years of people asking "Are you a DJ?", my answer is now, "Yes."

My voice gets noticed. I've always been a music collector, from 50's to current in many genres. My friends would drag me along to trivia games just to answer music questions.

I've got lots of music, over 70,000 songs. Not much country, but a whole lot of rock, alternative, punk, trance, house, techno and pop. If it was on the airwaves anytime from the 50's to yesterday, I've probably got it in my collection.

Building Xastir from CVS

Logged in as your primary username, right-click on the desktop and open a terminal window. Now we're going to build the latest version of Xastir. In the terminal window, type the following commands:

wget http://misc.luno.org/ubuntu-xastir-cvsbuild.sh
chmod a+x ubu*.sh
sudo ./ubuntu-xastir-cvsbuild.sh

Here's how I build our standard distribution for the MS-SCRAM team's data workstations. I strongly suggest using a dual-boot system (or using Linux-only on your laptop), but if you must, this can also be done under VirtualBox or another virtual machine environment.

Requirements

1Gb RAM (more for Virtual machines), at least 25 Gb free disk space, either a hardware serial UART or a USB-to-serial adapter.

This hasn't changed functionally, however it's been updated to make perltidy and perlcritic (running with '-3') happy. I've also changed a mess of if/elsif/elsif into a given/when statement, taking advantage of Perl 5.10's new case-like statement.

Future plans include factoring the Ices2 and Uniden Scanner interaction into two separate modules.

I salvaged an old APC MasterSwitch, model AP9210. It's a little beige 1U PDU with 10-baseT ethernet and a serial port which allows remote on/off/reboot of each outlet.

Control can be accomplished via telnet, HTTP or SNMP, but the easiest is HTTP. Here are two quick control scripts for the APC. They require the 'POST' tool from the LWP-REQUEST Perl package.

I've recently purchased an old school bus, with the intention of turning it into a camper/command post for the volunteering that I do.

I'll edit this page later to include more details and photos, but here are the basics:

Frame & Body: 1990 Thomas-built bus, on an International chassis.
Powertrain: 170HP DT360 (Inline Turbocharged 6-Cyl Diesel), 5-speed manual trans.
Gross Weight: 28,000 Lbs
Original Capacity: 70 Passengers ("12 window" bus)
Body Length: Around 45 feet, it's 39 feet from back of driver's seat to emergency exit at rear.

Release 1.2 includes:

Requirements:
512 Mb ram (you may have to tune the VM to use 256Mb); 1Gb ram preferred.
Up to 5Gb disk space
Any supported host operating system for Sun VirtualBox.
Performance is reasonable on 1Ghz processors and spiffy at 2Ghz.

In the VM:
Xubuntu 9.04 (Ubuntu GNU/Linux + Xfce window manager - lots of superfluous packages)
Xastir 1.9.4-3 (from the standard Ubuntu Universe repository) + supporting packages
TigerLine 2006 polylines (not polygons) for all Minnesota counties

On the desktop:
"Configure" Site chooser for 2009 Minnesota MS-150.

This is a customized distribution of Xubuntu Linux, meant to be run inside a Sun VirtualBox VM. It contains the Xastir APRS tracking software, pre-loaded with maps and features useful for tracking SAG vans and supply vehicles during the MS Society's fundraising bike tours in Minnesota.

I have put together a collection of software to assist the Ham Radio volunteers for MS-Society bike events with tracking mobile APRS stations. I've built this as a virtual machine (VM) image for Sun VirtualBox, a VM platform that is free for personal use and supports Linux, MacOS, Windows and Solaris/x86 host operating systems. The "Xastir for MS-SCRAM" image is based on a stripped-down version of Xubuntu 9.04 GNU/Linux, Xastir APRS tracking software and TigerLine maps of Minnesota.
